Not the contests.  The competition.  Now, I've only been to one RTL event,
and maybe I didn't understand the actual goal, but when the rules suggest
putting blocks on top of each other, well... a robot that flings blocks
across the table is not really much competition.

And, while we're at it, a really good group begins with solid leadership,
right.  Well, I would question the skills of anyone who would post a message
to a LEGO newsgroup with the heading "I can't build"

Personally, I think it added a lot of fun to the contest.

Fun, maybe.  But not competition.  It's like taking Jim Carry to the
Olympics.  It may be fun, but it doesn't make anyone run faster, or jump higher.

Or maybe it does.  I guess it's possible people have shown up at events
thinking, "I just hope my robot is not as bad as Chris'."

One of my favourite activities is taking shots at Chris’s building
capabilities, but, he has created a number of unique solutions for our
contests. And of course, he did come in 2nd in Project X (arguably, one of
the most difficult competitions to date), and ... he made one heck of a
CLOCK for the Monkey competition!

Bruce

Oh, but according to Chris, the monkey competition doesn't really count,
because that's an event that could be won with a battery box and a polarity
switch...

There are a couple ways to make a good competition.  One way is to pick a
very difficult task, and see if ANYONE can accomplish it.  Another is to
pick an easy task, and see who can accomplish it the best/fastest.

It's like racing a car.  How hard can it be to drive a car around a track
500 times?  I mean, really.  I could do that on my bicycle.  Ok, so I
couldn't do it at 200 mph (320kph), but I can accomplish the goal.

<Generalization>

I think the 'difficult task' competition is much more "Man against
machine/challenge", while the other is more "Man against Man".

The 'difficult task' is more suited to an engineer's mind.  "How can I do
this?" without respect to what anyone else is doing.  As an engineer myself,
I'd say most of us would prefer not to talk with other people.  Just leave
me in my cube with my pointy ears and Palm (pilot), and I'll be happy.

On the other hand, the simple challenges involve much more strategy.  At
least if you want to do well.  So, in order to win, you have to outthink the
other players.

</Generalization>

Don't mind Chris, he just likes to pick on people.  Five years of it and
I've learned to tune it out. :)

Calum

Don't worry about me.  I don't need protected any more than Chris does.  But
thanks, Calum.

I think I forgot to put a smilie in my last post.  That turns insults into
funny comments, right?  :)

Steve

P.S. if you don't know me, and are insulted by any of this post, please
consider my personality just like Chris'.

P.P.S. Like Chris, insulting me won't make me go away.
