this is life and the metric system can not stop it.   if you want your
1x2 to really be 1" x 2 " then buy oak, or plastic.

sorry but the real reason is that after cutting the wood to 1x2 they smooth it
by removing 1/4" on each side thus making it 1/2 x 1-1/2
