If this is too much trouble, I could raise the whole elevator.

This sounds better IMO.  Also more realistic, since AFAIK, the
grain elevators are raised above ground.  I've never heard of a
"pit" below ground level.  (The company I'm CAD designing for has
a much better method of moving grain, but that's a whole other
subject.)  Besides, inclined rails are much more interesting.

For a few years I lived in Vulcan, which held the record for the most
wooden grain elevators (11?) lined up along the railroad tracks.

Hey, Chris, would you happen to have any photos of these elevators in
Vulcan?  I bet most of them have been demolished by now.
Why am I asking?  A few years back, the elevators in the towns
around my old stomping grounds were being torn down quite quickly.
When convenient, I managed to take some photos of 'em before
the structures were relegated to history.  I've managed to gather
a small collection, but it's not organized or anything.

BTW, Vulcan has to be the *best* place name in Alberta. :-]
