you go to Administrative Tools and run Event Viewer?  I usually get
enough data to figure out what's going on at least.  Fixing it may be
another problem.

Yes and no.  I get plenty of data, not much of it useful.

Anyway, that's a machine of the past.  Reformatting resolves many problems (and
causes many others).
