Well, that was an interesting trip...

Since this thread only has 51 messages, and since I just happen to like the
number 52... :-P

Anyway, just got back from Scotland (no, really) and boy is the engine in my
LEGO spaceship I whipped up for the trip worn out! Melted plastic smells
funny, too.

Seriously, Cisco Systems (my company) sent me to north of Hadrian's Wall for
close to a month, where I had no Internet access; this is not to say that
the good folks in Scotland (who are awesome) don't have Internet, it's just
that my company didn't want me visiting naughty websites, I guess. :(

Anyway, I'm back now, and completely whacked by the shift in Time Zones.

The first fellow I got hold of (via email) was fellow
LUGNET-member-on-January1st Kyle Keppler, who communicated my return to Tim
Courtney. Meanwhile, I read the sad news about the departure of my superior
officer, Grand-Admiral Mark Sandlin (er...Muffinhead, use of which will
doubtless bring me latrine duty for a month).

Wow...gee...I was taken in faster than LEGO being sucked through a vacuum
cleaner. I dabbed my reptilian-like eyes with a dirty hanky (yuk) and
immediately (but temporarily) experienced a deranged sensation of greed as I
strategized of how I was going to outbid everyone and their dog when Mark's
LEGO collection came up for bid on eBay. I thought about selling my car and
most of my furniture in preparation, but thank goodness good sense returned.

Then Tim sent me an email telling me that the post was an April Fool's joke.
Upon reading, I collapsed in a collective puddle of melted, smelly LEGO.
Needless to say, my Cisco co-workers were quite stunned, but managed to
fashion me back together in a reasonable manner.

Tim was also kind enough to ask me to re-read Mark's original message.
That's when I re-collapsed, but this time my Cisco associates told me I
could jolly well put myself back together again.

I finally got my...er, self on the web and read every message in the thread.

Whoa.

Well, (ahem) I think I know when to be serious. I confess that I do not
"know" (old definition) Tim or Mark. But I do "know" (new definition) them
via the LUGNET community. That is what we are. The Internet, as my company
enjoys pointing out, has changed millions of lives. It has changed how we
interact as people. I believe, in many ways, that we all know Mark and each
other as though we were in the same neighborhood. I agree that 90% of
communicative aspects (facial expressions, emotion, tone, body language) are
lost via this medium, but I am confident we can overcome these
inconveniences through our civility, which I am glad to see that not a
single person on either side of the issue gave up just to get their point
across. For that, I am filled with admiration.

Neighbors, I'm glad to be back.

Sincerely,

Pat Hough (aka Shadekur)

P.S. If something really, really makes you angry, do what I do: watch the
movie "Airplane!". It's a classic.

"Captain, how soon can you land this plane?"
"I can't tell."
"You can tell me, I'm a doctor."
"No, I mean I'm just not sure."
"Can't you take a guess?"
"Well...not for another two hours."
"You can't take a guess for another two hours?"
"No, I mean we can't LAND for another two hours."

  Calling it Quits

After much consideration, I've decided to call it quits. Perhaps it's just old age, or maybe I'm just losing interest. Regardless, I've decided to sell off my collection. I really want to thank everyone for all their support. LEGO has brought me (...) (23 years ago, 25-Mar-01, to lugnet.announce) !!
