The Pyramids at Giza are some of the most fascinating relics in human history,
IMHO.  James, have you ever read any of Graham Hancock's books?
http://www.grahamhancock.com/  If you are a Pyramid fan, you will be *completely*
absorbed in his works and ideas.  For example, you mention that the 3 pyramids
aren't randomly placed.  Hancock believes their positions match the positions of
the three stars in Orion's belt.  And that is only the beginning.  You won't
believe how interesting his thoughts are about the placement of the Great Sphinx.
Great stuff!

John:

Thanks for the info. on Graham Hancock - I'll definitely look into them.  In my
mind, the construction of the Pyramids is the greatest unsolved mystery of human
history.  I don't fall into the camp that believes that they had Alien
assistance in their construction - for one thing, I believe that such an
interaction would have had such a profound impact on human culture, that
unmistakable lore and accounts of the event would have survived over time, and
would have been passed to us (in artwork, burial chamber relics, religious
practices, etc., etc.)  The scale of human construction is almost unfathomable,
though.  For one thing, how could they feed such a work-force?  It must have
taken all of the resources of Egypt, as well as many tribute-states.  I'm really
not very well-informed about the matter, but I think that by all accounts, the
building of the Pyramids is a very mysterious subject.

Well, Hancock believes that the construction of Cheops would tax even *20th* century
technology, much less a culture that existed 15,000 years ago (which is when, he
believes, all of the stuff at Giza was begun).  For example, there are only 2 cranes
in the world even capable of lifting the tonnage in one block of stone from Cheops.
You must read his books because to say that the building of the Pyramids is a very
mysterious subject is putting it mildly;-)
