Agree with Larry. Netiquette could swing both ways depending on who, when,
and what forum.

Ok, my take is a very definite "no". My advice is: Don't be offended by
anything. Or try not to be. It's a waste of emotion, and being a negative
one, often only serves to get people into trouble. Avoid.
Instead, think twice before you answer a question of his in such depth
again. If it would have made it 'worthwhile' to you to get a thanks, but not
otherwise, maybe next time you can just give a quickie answer instead of one
so in depth, unless he asks for more detail. Or, if it was worthwhile to you
regardless of whether or not he said thanks, keep answering in depth.
I guess the way I phrased it makes it sound kinda negative above. A better
way to say it might be something like: "I usually find that the more
'thanks!' replies I get, the more likely I am to do a similar amount of
research the next time."
For my own sake, I appreciate well-researched messages, even if it's not
right away. I'll do searches for them in the future, and often re-read them
at later dates. I've done this on Lugnet a number of different times,
because not only can I and others use the post for 'research', but it saves
me from having to write it all out again in the event that someone else is
looking for the same information later. If, say, a year from now, someone
asks the same question, you can just say "Check out this post: ....". As can
others. When I see other people making references to my own posts, that's
even better than a 'gee, thanks' post.
