Re: Unexplained power outages in New York, Toronto, and other cities

(...) And what if something else accidentally happened, that changed the properties of the absorbing elements? Or what if a terrorist figured out a way to do the above? Or what if it's effectiveness changed drastically after the first 2 days? What (...) (21 years ago, 18-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Unexplained power outages in New York, Toronto, and other cities

(...) Um...no. The reactor is called "TRIGA", and is located in Torry Pines, at General Atomic(s?) site. It CANNOT expode, or melt down. Physics dictate how anything will act, and it WILL NOT explode/PCI, no matter what you do with it- remove the (...) (21 years ago, 18-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Power links

Thanks for the links, Chris. I've already read some diagonally, and intend to continue to do so over the week. I feel the need to clarify something, though: I am not against the use of any power source "per se", and declaredly for the highest (...) (21 years ago, 17-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Power links

Oops, I meant to include links. Read the basics about fast breeder reactors at (URL) about the Integral Fast Reactor at (URL) and (URL) a brief nuclear energy FAQ with good links at (URL) about some considerations that go into when to and not to (...)   Power (was: Unexplained power outages in New York, Toronto, and other cities)

There's a bunch of stuff I wanted to comment on so I'm just rolling it together here. I'll also preface with the clear statement of my stance: I am part of cult of alternative energy. I have done the research needed to completely back off the grid. (...) (21 years ago, 17-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Unexplained power outages in New York, Toronto, and other cities

(...) I'm curious of what conditions you considered in your maths. (...) It is true that the consumption is greatly reduced at night time, which is not to say electricity is not produced or used at all. In fact, much of the electricity generated at (...)   Re: Unexplained power outages in New York, Toronto, and other cities

(...) OK, that's great. But how much do you think it would cost you to cover your house in enough panels to just break even on energy consumption? If over $10K, what's the point, except the feeling of self-reliance (nothing wrong with that), or the (...) (21 years ago, 17-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Unexplained power outages in New York, Toronto, and other cities

[snip] (...) Well I have done the math it would save my household about $10,000 over the course of the solar panels lifetime versus the current electric bill. (...) Well my house has a gas generator for back-up power already. It is slightly more (...) (21 years ago, 17-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

John Poindexter (was Re: TIA (was Re: A serious clone question)

How does the right justify this guy? He's Mr. Secret Government! (URL) Mr. Poindexter was indicted on March 16, 1988 on seven federal felony charges stemming from the Iran-Contra scandal. The counts included participating in a criminal conspiracy (...) (21 years ago, 16-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.fun, lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)

Re: Newsbits: CA Recall and IMF-Argentina Negotiations

(...) One book may be a revelation, or it could be a disgruntled whiner. It may be correct for the situation he was in, but not for the industry at large. It may even be correct for the industry at large, but by itself, it would be hard to draw that (...) (21 years ago, 16-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)

Re: Unexplained power outages in New York, Toronto, and other cities

(...) And extremely costly. Consider that by the time the solar panels would require replacement, they still wouldn't have paid off their initial cost. Why else do you think non-oil producing countries have not implemented the system? It's not as if (...) (21 years ago, 16-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Unexplained power outages in New York, Toronto, and other cities

(...) The solar panels I am referring to are BASED on technology NASA created for solar panel use and construction. A typical home shingled in solar panels would generate enough power to operate lights and small appliances in overcast and light (...) (21 years ago, 16-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Newsbits: CA Recall

(...) I regret to say I don't know any more than you on this, the word is unfamiliar to me. Rest assured, I'll look into it and let you know ASAP what I find. (...) You're guessing correctly: racism is based on race, xenophoby on passport (to put it (...) (21 years ago, 16-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)

  Re: Newsbits: CA Recall

(...) I really can’t argue with that, you are quite correct, although I lived for a while in a city called La Habra, I still have no idea what that was supposed to mean in Spanish, Abra I think (...) I looked xenophobic up on dictionary.com to (...) (21 years ago, 15-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)

  Re: Newsbits: CA Recall

(...) The sold portion is small when compared to the conquered portion, as you know. In any case, the main cities are not called St Francis, The Angels, or Sacrament: so you can't deny that Mexico has shaped what you know as California now. If (...) (...) <snip> (...) You, the rest of your country, and the rest of the world. Get the moron out of office--all this reeks to high heaven! Davis was recalled for far less. Dave K (21 years ago, 15-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Newsbits: CA Recall and IMF-Argentina Negotiations

(...) But Bush *has* engaged in Lay-favorable cronyism and protectionism, as Bruce has already ably discussed. That (presumably) separates Bush-the-potential-cronyist from Carl-the-potential-rapist. And you haven't addressed McAuliffe in this regard (...) (21 years ago, 15-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Newsbits: CA Recall

(...) Well-said. This country was built on immigration--I'm second-generation American myself. Legal immigration should be cheap, if not easy (we value dearly what we acquired dearly). Immigration should be for the purpose of becoming an American (...) (21 years ago, 15-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)
