I think Pawel worded his post rather poorly. one could read it as he is
plugging his auction here on .theory. But if one examines the listing,
one discovers that he's plugging *Castle World* via an auction.
Pawel, you need to be MUCH more careful in your wording... any
suggestion that you are plugging an auction anywhere other than in
.market.auction may cause sparking. That said...
This is an interesting topic in its own right.
Here are a few questions. eBay ToS frown on using auctions to do things
like promote other auction sites, other places where the merch is
available, or as a way to comment on other sellers, etc.
I know, as I've run afoul of all of these. :-)
IS what Pawel did a violation of the letter of eBay ToS? I don't think
so, per se, as Castle World isn't selling anything in particular
(except, perhaps, good fellowship). Is it a violation of the spirit of
eBay ToS? I dunno.
That's one line of questioning that's interesting.
Here's another... how *effective* is it? Did this listing do what Pawel
wanted? Did it generate traffic? Did it raise money toward the domain
name registration? Again, I dunno.

| (...) Pawel, The intention of creating .market.theory was not to have yet another forum for making auction flogs/plugs, but rather to have in-depth discussions and (even more so) meta-discussions about auctions and other marketplace stuff. --Todd (25 years ago, 23-Feb-00, to lugnet.market.theory)
