I have to say that, based on my experience, at least a goodly number of
people seem to find them useful. I certainly notice a surge in orders at my
shop after a post here. I even post here after I reopen my shop, mainly
because I like to see the people who have gone through the trouble (not that
it is any real trouble) of setting up wanted item notify lists at Brickbay
get first crack at parts.

You're right in saying that it is easier (for those who use them) to find
things using the search functionality of the site, but I'm not sure everyone
does their shopping the way you do.
I notice a large surge of orders when I post a message here about my
Brickbay shop. I notice a fairly steady stream of orders in the days
following. I can't be absolutely sure but that suggests to me that a
largish number of people respond to either the wanted item notifications or
the posting here, and another group do their own browsing/searching. I
wouldn't hazard a guess as to which group is larger, although I do think
that the results from posting here have a larger single day effect than
anything else.

But this isn't just any online forum. This isn't anything like
rec.toys.lego. This is a group structure that was created specifically for
the type of postings being discussed here. They don't overlap or interfere
with Classic Space discussions or Lego website discussions - they live in
.b-s-t where they're supposed to. Auction announcements live in .auction
where they're supposed to.

You don't want those _types_ of posts to appear or you don't want posts in
the buy-sell-trade group to appear? One sounds impossible to achieve, while
the other ought to be possible in much the same way that Todd made it
possible for us to choose to see (or not see) posts on the main page.
We've had discussions like this one before, and some people would be happier
if we had a bazillion groups (say things like
lugnet.market.buy-sell-trade.brickbay-flog) but I'm not one of them.
My messages always contain the words Brickbay shop, for instance. Pretty
easy to not click on it and read it (using the web interface) if you don't
want to - just as I almost never click on eBay auction postings. Sure it
may mean at any given time I see 4 eBay postings on the main market page and
have to click "10 more" but that really isn't that big a deal imo.
As for the original issue, I'm not too concerned with it as I address where
and how I will ship in my FAQ which I ask people to read in every post I
make. I guess if I had a standard form post to copy and paste in sticking
an extra line reflecting the fact that I only ship within the US might work,
but I'm not going to promise to remember to include that every time.
