(...) Rachel, Do they all say "LEGO" on the studs? Most of the 1949-56 Lego does not, 1957-present does. Thanks Gary, I also have 1x4, 1x6, and 1x8, without cylinders. The colour of the plastic is slightly different too. Perhaps the men go with the lego and it's all 1978? (...) OK, Here's a few helpful tips. If 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 pieces have NO tubes underneath, and they have slots on 2 of the sides of the bricks, they are from 1949-56. Thanks for telling me about bricklink, I'll have a look around there. I think that I may not have phrased my question clearly. I have some of the very first lego ever made. It is not regular lego. I recently purchased a heap of assorted lego at a garage sale... There is quite a lot of the old style lego, the stuff without the cylinders, in various colours. (...) The Samsonite Lego 50x50 plate was known as #799 (same number used in Europe) when it was first introduced in late 1965. (...) Paul, The suitcase is probably a Samsonite set (it may even carry their logo/copyright somewhere on it). The online DB's are sorely lacking in Samsonite info.
