That's true--it's just a shame you have to go through Homestead to get to
it!  Seriously, I think that area will get a nice little boost in the coming
years.

People just don't shop downtown anymore, not in Pittsburgh.  South
Hills Village is no more than 10 miles from downtown, and there are a whole
bunch of shops near it as well.  Ross Park Mall is about the same, and there
is also a whole bunch of stuff on McKnight Road.  I certainly couldn't go
downtown on the T or a bus and buy 12 Lego sets at a time like I did during
the recent sale.

I wish that a Target or Wal-Mart were more accessible, though.  It's a shame
that the only ones in the area are a million miles from town.  Does anyone in
the South Hills really want to drive an hour to get to Target?  I read
somewhere that Ames bought into so many locations as a pre-emptive marketing
measure against Wal-Mart and Target incursion.
Speaking of Wal-Mart, why is the one near Century III so well-defended
against customer access?  The first time I went there we passed both darkened
signs twice before stopping at a BP to ask directions.  The store wasn't
closed, but it might as well have been!

Did you know that one of the new department stores downtown
(it might be Lazarus) pays no rent until it makes $40 million in sales? I
don't think it is a bad idea to encourage new businesses, but this might be
going a little bit too far.

Especially since Lazarus already has a (somewhat over-rated) presence in
the area.  Sheesh!  I wish I didn't have to pay rent until I made $40 million!

    Dave!

(...) Those stores are very new to the area. Did you live here before you went to PSU? If not, I guess something you may not know is that Hills (now Ames) and K-Mart were the dominant discount stores. Actually, the Target & Wal-Mart in the Robinson (...)
