Clearly they need to make sure that anything they do for us makes financial
success to them, and expressed concern that the scheduled Red Letter Day on
June 1st was cancelled by RLD due to lack of interest, particularly
considering that the April event was highly successful and we all sung its
praises here on LUGNET. If the RLD could not be made a success among AFOLs,
they had little confidence that anything else could be.

It was probably the choice of date that was the problem, the long weekend is
a prime time for people to go away with their families.  (Likewise 10/8 is a
problem for me.  To maximise attendance I would have thought a date outside
the holidays would be better (though perhaps not for those travelling from
the Continent)

So, the outcome of the meeting as it relates to this topic can be summarised
as follows, which again is as per Jon's messages:

1. The August RLD would be enhanced to appeal even more to the AFOL
community
2. We agreed to publicise it widely here and elsewhere to maximise
attendance, not only from UKAFOLs, but also those from those in Europe and
perhaps even further afield.
3. If that event can be made a success and we 'behave ourselves' (Jon's
words :) ) then we can move forward with other ideas and both benefit from
further association.

The RLD is therefore the start of what will hopefully be a long term
relationship. It's early days and who knows where it may lead.

This is a much better explanation of what happened and why, thank you Huw.

In a separate development, LEGO Direct have made contact with us and also
Lawrence with a view to participating in AFOL events in the UK, along the
lines of their involvement in Holland and the USA.

Very interesting indeed!

Clearly we have an exciting time ahead. I just hope we can appear as a
unified body and don't bicker amongst ourselves and put a damper on things.

Me too.

Now, I think, would be a good time to start the formation of an official UK
AFOL organisation. Comments please!

Huw

Suggestions as to how we would start this:

Step 1 - post here specifically to suggest the formation of a 'group' (I
think UKLUG is as good a name as any by the way), give all a set time to
respond with any objection.

Step 2 - draft a proposal of how it would be structured, how it would work
and what its terms of reference would be.  Post it and invite comments,
again by a set date.

Step 3 - Take into account comments, redraft and repost.

Step 4 - Call a meeting, at a Fest or otherwise, to finalise and set it off.

I think Step 2 is a one or two-man job.  Is anyone interested in doing it?
(I'm not as I'm as busy in non-creative lego-stuff as I want to be).

(...) off. (...) That sounds like a good plan. Does anyone have any experience in these sort of things? I don't. Tony P, you are very keen. Do you want to start off with number 1? (btw -- I believe Jon Hayward owns uklug.com, so we're off to a good (...) (22 years ago, 5-Jun-02, to lugnet.loc.uk)
