Whilst trying to find some discounted Star Wars Lego in the North Harbour
Tesco's (Portsmouth), I saw a display stand for digital cameras, at a penny
under a ton.  Has anyone bought one of these, or know someone who has?  Are
they any good?

Spec is as follows:
Price: £199-99

This is a pretty high price for a digicam of this spec.
The high street is NOT usually a good place to look.
Though I notice you said 'penny under a ton', then said it was £199.99, Did
you mean £99.99, which would be more reasonable.
What model was it

Some alternative examples. e.g. same spec at lower price, or same price higher
spec
Try www.novatech.co.uk (I just happen to have their catalog on my desk)
Kodak EX200. 640x480 LCD viewer, 4mb memory, flash, etc is only £92 (inc vat)
HP photosmart c200 1152x872, 8mb compactflash card £233 (inc vat)
Both have good reputations.

Jenoptixs is not a bad cost brand. Get their 640x480 model for just £89 inc
vat and shipping from
http://www.sherwoods-photo.com/jenoptik_digital/jd11_fs.htm

There is a wider choice at specialist on-line camera shops such as
http://www.ukdigital.co.uk/
http://www.sherwoods-photo.com/
http://www.digitalfirst.co.uk/

these guys are all ultra competitive and really know what they are talking
about. Though you might have to dig around, or phone them, to find low cost
models. they often focus on the new stuff, but they are very good.

You will also find that most of the computer component sellers you see
advertising in computer mags like Dabs and Simply are very competitive on
digital cameras.

The best place to determine what model to actually buy are
http://www.dcresource.com/
http://www.steves-digicams.com/
http://www.imaging-resource.com/

these are on-line magazines that feature really in-depth reviews and
comparisons.

Word of warning. You will only want to spend more money once you start
researching though!

(...) I bought one of those in a package with a HP printer (which usually goes for £100) from Jungle for £245, and am very happy with both. Being a camera novice, it has taken me a bit of time to learn how to use it effectively, and as a result some (...) (24 years ago, 9-Oct-00, to lugnet.loc.uk)
