Hi Allister,

I am a newsgroup lurker who has been spurred into posting in response to
your introduction.  For a while there I thought you were writing about me.

For example : I'm 33, married with 2 kids, age 5 and 2, mortgage (in
Coorparoo), dark age from age 12-31, lego renaissance catalysed by young
son.  Loved classic space lego, like all 11 year old boys in 1980, and now
love my Milennium Falcon.  Did have a dog, but had to send her to Doggy
Heaven (no, she was not put down, we gave her to a pet food wholesaler).

Eerie.

I found some Classic Space minifigs in a tub of jambalaya I picked up last
week, not to mention the 2 4x1 blue bricks with LL918 on it and lots of CS
logo bricks (woohoo). I've got a suspicion that there's a 6950 in there too :^)

It seems from reading other posts that a large proportion of AFOL's are
people who have rediscovered the joy of building thing's (and let's face it,
smashing things apart) after digging out their old lego collections for
their children.

Unfortunately I'm having to start from scratch. I left my childhood
collection with my first wife for when our son grew up. Long story.

I've been working as a piping draftsman for a few years now. The software we
use is much like a Lego set. Lot's of components to pick from - put them
together in a multitude of ways. It was only a matter of time before I
returned to The Brick.

Now I'm guilty of buying my 5 year old son many sets that
are far too advanced for him - still, I get to build them, and I am
investing in his future lego collection.

My wife reckons I'll put Dougal off Lego by simply overwhelming him with too
much. I doubt it myself. He likes playing with the things we build,
eventually, when he starts building, he'll appreciate a good supply of Lego.
Apparently he said to my wife the other day 'You can't have too much Lego'.
I wonder where he heard that? ;^)

The best thing about being an AFOL is being able to get the really big sets
that mum and dad couldn't afford all those years ago.  Unfortunately there's
also no-one to say "no" so spending can get a bit out of hand.

Don't you have a wife? Mine's pretty good at saying 'no'. Then again she is
reasonably understanding with garage sale purchases, and don't even get me
started about eBay.

Alas, I do not have an engineering bent, as my sad and unstable attempts at
space vehicles can attest, but the amazing Tolkien-inspired creations of Jon
Furman (brickshelf) have inspired me.  My lego LOTR chess set is almost
complete, and after then who knows - Minas Tirith?

Actually I think my engineering and design bent came about because of a
childhood swamped in Lego, not the other way around. The basics of structual
engineering can be summed up in one sentence: If it isn't strong enough,
beef it up. The trick in the real world is to figure this out before you
build it. With Lego this isn't so critical - you can build it and beef it up
as needs must.

My plans for the Black Space Barracuda are slowly forming in my mind. I want
to build the actual Black Seas Barracuda first, though, so it might be a
while before I get around to solidifying it.

Cheers,

Scott Kirton

P.S.  Allister,  what is the CAR project, and do you know Kent Lyons?

CAR = Comalco Alumina Refinery. It's being built in Gladstone as we speak.
Kent Lyons? The name rings a bell. Tall chap? Glasses, goatee and gingerish
hair? If that's him, I don't think he's on the project any more.
