I also had problems with lining up pieces. Here are some things that helped me:
  • Adjust the mouse sensitivity in the LDD configuration program. This will help with the “floaty” feeling of the pieces.

Raise or lower the sensitivity?

I raised it - I set it at about 1.5, if I remember correctly.

I’ll try that.

Also, has anyone figured out how to rotate a piece around its own center? When I was able to rotate a piece it seemed to do so around one of its own corners, which moves the piece out of the model rather than just turning a different face forward. Any help would be appreciated. I really want to enter a model in the contest but I’m finding the software more challenging than I expected.

They always seem to rotate around the corners for me as well. I’m not sure what you mean by “moves the piece out of the model”.

Picture 4 2x2 bricks together as a square. (2 bricks wide, 2 bricks long) So you have a model that is 4 studs x 4 studs. If I were to rotate one of those, around its own corner, it would move itself out of that 4x4 configuration. Compare that to when I rotate the same piece in LeoCAD, the piece would rotate around its own center axis. So it would show different faces to the outside of the model but it would maintain the 4x4 shape of the thing I was creating.

If part of your model is out of the buildable area, you can recenter the view by pressing the spacebar. This changes the cursor into a little square target - whereever you click next will become the new center point of the view.

Another good hint. Thanks!

Hey, does your version end up with your regular Windows mouse pointer stuck in the top left corner of the screen, while the usable cursor is that hand thingy?

Thanks again,
Allan B.

(...) It looks like they have put the zero point of the parts in one corner, not in the center point as in LDRAW. OTOH, when you are tilting a part (up arrow) it's not rotating around the same point, but that may be an effect of the snapping. (...) (...) (20 years ago, 11-Nov-04, to lugnet.lego)
