In Europe, I think that the retail culture is different from North America • and
that explains a lot right there.  I also think that Europe is not as 'wired' • as
we are.  There might be some reasons for that, first, N.A. are just plain
gadget happy and like playing with computers and the like, the second big
reason is that many places in Europe charge for local calls - that means that
companies discourage playing and if no playing then people are not as likely • to
spend on something like the internet that they are unfamiliar with.  Sound
reasonable?

Well, it sounds reasonable, but I doubt it's the truth! Concerning the
'wiredness', I think Finland and Sweden are among the top 10 in the world.

It's more a case of shopping culture, I think (and 'time culture'?). We are
not in such a big hurry, we can go to the store and have a chat with someone
there (and pay with _real_ money).

The Swedes are _very_ concerned about security in (net) transactions, and that
has held the electronic commerce back here for a long time now. Remember, we
are still slowly converting to using credit cards, instead of real money.

As for the Internet connections, yes, we have to pay for local phone calls,
but that will probably disappear sooner or later. More and more people get
their net connection 'free' via the cable TV connection and so on, so the
phone companies have to give in some time. I think I've read somewhere that
more than 50% of the Swedish population has access to the net.
