If you do a deja search on rec.photo.digital. I did after I first
heard of Imagek, and found that they've been promising their EFS
product will be ready "real soon now" for the last two years,
constantly pushing back the deadline for release. (hmmm, sound like
any large Pacific Northwestern software companies we've seen?) The
general consensus is that even if the EFS is eventually released, it
will be so far beyond the digital camera technology that it won't be
worth the trouble. Evidently the fact that it uses CMOS technology
instead of CCD like other digital cams is seen as a
drawback--apparently the sensitivity is lower and the end photos look
worse. A shame really, because it sounds like a great idea and I'd
have loved to drop one in my SLR and use my zooms and accessories.
Personally I've decided (after Todd's praise and the cool train videos
on James Mathis' site) that I'm just going to pick up a Sony Mavica.
The floppies seem too useful to ignore--I love the idea of pulling a
normal disk out of a camera and having ready-to-use JPGs and MPEGs on
something I can stick in virtually any computer I'm near with no
fuss/cables/drivers/conversion software, etc. If anyone has any
insight into the different video-capable Mavicas (FD81, FD83, FD88,
FD91) please share it to help in the decision process.
