What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

I live in a small town in western North Carolina and I often travel to nearby towns and cities to look for deals on Lego in places like Wal*mart. Lately, I've noticed a disturbing trend. The stores in the following cities have *very little* Lego on (...) (19 years ago, 7-Apr-05, to lugnet.general)

Re: What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

(...) I find the same thing here in Vermont. It's getting to the point where it's almost impossible to buy Lego retail. WalMart had a few Duplo tubs and Bionicle, and then the rest of the "Lego" aisle was full of MegaBloks. Same story at K-Mart. At (...) (19 years ago, 7-Apr-05, to lugnet.general)

Re: What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

(...) It's a nationwide trend, from what I've heard. WalMart has been gradually favoring MegaBloks for various reasons, and not purchasing as much Lego. Mainly, I think it's due to WalMart's analysis software which helps them predict what will sell (...) (19 years ago, 7-Apr-05, to lugnet.general)

Re: What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

(...) FWIW, my local Wal*Mart (western PA) just added a bunch of Star Wars EPIII stuff to its LEGO aisle, while the MegaBloks inventory has remained about the same for several months. I know that MegaBloks has new sets coming out within a month or (...) (19 years ago, 7-Apr-05, to lugnet.general)

Re: What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

(...) Same here in Charleston, SC. However, Target still has an excellent LEGO selection and while they're not as widespread as WalMart, they seem to have a few stores in every region (I'm not sure about the Boone area though). -Orion (19 years ago, 7-Apr-05, to lugnet.general)

Re: What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

(...) Not to be picky, or anything, but isn't a discussion like this best placed in .loc.us? I think there would be an outcry if I started a thread about Swedish shops here... (19 years ago, 7-Apr-05, to lugnet.general)

Re: What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

(...) That may be true where you are but the TRU here in Victoria, BC, Canada has reduced their LEGO inventory significantly. At one point they had 1/2 of the usual LEGO row of shelves stocked with MB products! What really made me angry was them (...) (19 years ago, 7-Apr-05, to lugnet.general)

Re: What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

In the small towns outside of Tulsa, OK the selection 2 months ago was exactly as follows (top to bottom): Bionicle figures in cans Knights Kingdom figures in cans Some Quatro and Duplo And that was it, though I'm sure they have some Star Wars sets (...) (...) And then there's the economic impact of Wal-Mart. A recent study from the Pennsylvania State University, (URL) that the presence of Wal-Mart in a county increased the family poverty rate or lowered the magnitude of the decrease in family (...)   Re: What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

(...) To a certain extent, toys are a seasonal product. True there will be toys sales all year long, but the volume of toys sold is concentrated between November and February. I definately see this in my BL store (becuase I sell primarily sets). Toy (...) (19 years ago, 8-Apr-05, to lugnet.market.theory)

Re: What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

(...) As it happens, there was a magazine article in (Australian) Business Review Weekly this week primarily about the demise of TRU but also about Wal-Mart as it is the category-killer's killer. What it says ... Discounters [e.g. Wal-Mart] realised (...) (19 years ago, 12-Apr-05, to lugnet.market.theory, lugnet.loc.au)

Re: What's up with the Wal*mart Lego selection?

(...) You go right ahead and talk about Swedish shops and the lack of LEGO in a given type of shop. I will _not_ complain. If you happen to write them in English, I'll read them and see what is happenning in Sweden. It would make me feel so worldly (...) (19 years ago, 21-Apr-05, to lugnet.general)
