I find the same thing here in Vermont.  It's getting to the point where it's
almost impossible to buy Lego retail.  WalMart had a few Duplo tubs and
Bionicle, and then the rest of the "Lego" aisle was full of MegaBloks.  Same
story at K-Mart.  At Kay-Bee the other day, they had no Lego at all.  My best
bet for buying retail is Toys R Us, which is about a three hour drive for me.

Also of interest, is that the stock that is
being carried is not made up of traditional "sets."  There are Duplo and
sometimes Quatro tubs and buckets, Bionicle cans, and basic brick tubs and
buckets.

That's the other thing that I've noticed.  Of what is offered in the stores,
there is really nothing to catch a buyer's eye.  I remember being a kid and
running to the bright yellow Lego aisle, to see row upon row of sets ranging
from the low price range (less than $5) to the high range (over $100).  There
seemed to be something for everyone.  Lately, I find that if I want to buy
anything other than Bionicle or Star Wars, I have to order online.  A good
example is the new police motorcycle.  I'd really love to buy that set, and it's
a good price point, especially for a child who might spend their allowance on
bricks, but the only place to get it is through Shop at Home.  I can't bring
myself to buy an item for less then $5, and then spend almost as much money
having it shipped to me (I know, "buy more").

On the other hand, the Lego brand stores seem to do really well, if you happen
to be near one.  The nearest one to me is near Boston, so it's a really long
trip to visit, but it's always packed when we get there.

to browse in a Lego retail store)
