I don’t think the general public is aware of the change, as in a substitute versus just another color Lego has added.

Hum....

Well maybe we should inform them. Is there anyone who would be up for writing a press release informing the public of the color changes? This letter would be a simple explanation of the change, what sets they have effected, and why it was a bad decision concentrating on color matching issue rather than the “they suck” defense. I would do it myself but I don’t believe my writing skills are up to par, not to mention it may conflict with my job.

Sincerely from a mega block free home, OnDrew

Along the same lines, how about someone writes a polite complaint letter and posts it on LUGNET? Then everyone could copy it, print it, sign it, and mail it. Would LEGO’s receiving hundreds of identical letters be as influential as LEGO’s receiving hundreds of different letters about the same subject? I’m just thinking that some people simply can’t write good letters, so this would make things easier. Also, such a letter could easily be converted into a press release or a letter to the editor of your local paper. I’ll volunteer, but I need to know all the facts. It won’t do to send a letter complaining about something that’s erroneous to begin with.

So, the letter would have to say . . .
  • The color changes are upsetting. Why?
  1. The colors are not simply new; they are replacements, which means they won’t match existing colors. (I need to know specific colors.)
  2. If pieces in the old colors will no longer be made, eventually the existing stock will be gone, making it harder to get them. (Again, specifics please).
  3. LEGO’s official reason (the colors are too dull!) is just silly. Have you ever heard anyone say “You know what? I don’t like grey LEGO pieces because they’re just too dull.“? Here you can also say whether any of the old colors were your favorite.
  4. Optional section where you mention you don’t like all the weird new colors to begin with (flourescent green, etc).
  • Ask LEGO some questions. (This will force them to reply to your letter, which means the public relations people will have a big job to do in answering them. They might have to create a form letter for this, but if they’re doing their jobs correctly, the higher-ups will hear about the flood of mail they’re receiving.)
  1. Why not just make these new colors in addition to the existing ones, like LEGO has been doing for the last several years?
  2. Will the old colors ever come back? (Yes, I know Jake already answered this, but remember that we want a mailed response.)
  3. Does this have anything to do with LEGO’s recent financial problems?
  4. Any other questions you can think of.
  • Closing remarks:
  1. You tell LEGO you will be boycotting all/some of their products until the old colors are restored.
  2. --OR--
  3. You tell LEGO you still support them, but you’re very upset and concerned, etc.
If it isn’t a good idea to have everyone mail the same letter, at least this list will help those who wish to write one themselves. Remember to fit this all on one page.

Please correct any of the above or add to it. I’ll write a rough draft when I have enough information. I simply didn’t care to read all the posts about this subject, so summarize them for me.

Thanks!

(...) To be honest with you, that's not the most effective tactic. In the era of high-speed reprographics and internet petitions, identical letters (and sometimes any machine-produced document) are given a lower priority in terms of their importance (...)
