suggested contacting LEGO customer service by phone, letter, or email. I

Nope. Not gonna. Don’t care. The old greys are muddy and weird. There, I said
it. Now let the “A”F(reaks!)oL self-appointed sergeants-at-arms have at me for
speaking heresy. If I never read another highlighted post about this topic it
will be too soon. (Sigh, thereby guaranteeing that someone will highlight this
thread ...)
I never had a Lego dark age but the overwrought response to the color change is
as likely to bring one on as anything.
If you are going to spend a stamp, attach it to a letter to your elected
representative about something that matters (for those of you in
representational democracies). If you need some hints about what real problems
deserve your attention, put down the bricks for a moment, push yourself away
from the computer and read a paper.
