HA HA! I do everything that was listed here, so I must annoy everyone to
some point! :)

Here's an even more loaded question: is there a difference in approach
between those who grew up on Lego in the early days, (when there were
only "brick assortment" sets and no sets which built a specific model,
and no step-by-step instructions) and those who grew up with it when
most of the Lego one bought came in sets, with instructions?

I grew up with sets with the step by step instructions, but now I mostly buy
the bulk buckets, and when I do buy a set it is generally just for the
pieces (sometimes I don't even build it).  I much prefer to use my own
imagination.

I tend to do both - I build the official model or models when I get the
first one of a set, and often record models or ideas as instructions
as I build. But I also buy sets for parts, and buy bulk stuff from
time to time. Mike and Larry have conspired to supply me with a fair
quantity of yellow bricks, and I have bought the odd item from AucZilla
and other (lesser :) auctions.

But fundamentally it's a question of preference, much like that between
you funny types who buy non-Technic Lego, and us sensible people who
build working models. I have decided that I can barely understand train
people who make layouts and scale <whatever you call trains>, let
alone those who build town layouts. The collectors of Lego have me
completely flummoxed. And completists, don't get me started on
completists. Face it, I gave up stamp collecting as soon as I got to
the bit about sticking them in an album. The egoboo of having a
complete lot of a Lego theme is "like, what"? Let alone leaving Lego
in boxes. That's sacrilege, half the time I don't even take the
box out of the shop. Why carry rubbish home with me?
