I agree with Kevin and Silas.
Back in the 60's (when I was a child), I remember getting the Junior Constructor
set #717, for Christmas. The only instructions were on the inside of the box
top. It was a 500 piece set, and there were only 3 pictures (3 steps of
building) of the model house in different stages of completion! Back then they
did not "spoon feed" you step by step instructions for where every brick was
supposed to go. If this house were made as a set today, I would guarantee you
that there would be instructions with 15 steps (and diagrams), rather than the 3
that were given in that set. Back then you had to use your imagination to
figure out how to complete the back of buildings, since instructions were such
that you always got the front perspective. I always found this intriguing.
Perhaps there is a difference of philosophy between the old days when more was
left to your imagination, and today, when people build exactly according to the
diagrams.
I too buy mostly LEGO by the bucket today. The other sets are mostly wall
pieces, BURPS and specialty pieces. I don't have a problem with the
proliferation of specialty pieces, since they can sometimes make a great
contribution to my building projects. Recent examples of specialty pieces that
I really like are: 1) the 2x3 bricks with the rounded end, 2) the straight and
curved railing pieces, 3) stairstep arches, 4) 1x1 cone bricks, 5) "log" type
corregated bricks, 6) a lot of items from the Paradisa and Ninja Systems.
I buy specialized sets just for parts. I have many castle sets (Yellow Castle,
Knights Castle, Kings Castle, Eldorado Fortress) that I've never even put
together, but use the pieces for my own building projects.
And I do like to check out other people's ideas. I've learned a lot from other
people. I learned about making curved sides to buildings, how to make Gothic
Window Tracery, etc. With an infinite number of ways to put LEGO together,
there are zillions of ideas that we all can learn from. And the refreshing
thing about LEGO is that you never run out of new ways to do things.
