Here's a loaded question...

I see a lot of posts asking for instructions or pictures of how to build
a <insert item here>. Not just ideas, but actual step-by-step
instructions.

Is it just me, or does this seem like a contradiction of the idea behind
Lego? Isn't the idea to use our own imaginations to come up with our own
creations?

I agree

Here's an even more loaded question: is there a difference in approach
between those who grew up on Lego in the early days, (when there were
only "brick assortment" sets and no sets which built a specific model,
and no step-by-step instructions) and those who grew up with it when
most of the Lego one bought came in sets, with instructions?

I grew up with sets with the step by step instructions, but now I mostly buy
the bulk buckets, and when I do buy a set it is generally just for the
pieces (sometimes I don't even build it).  I much prefer to use my own
imagination.
I regularly look at other people's creations on the web, and often I see
wonderful ideas which I never would have thought of.  I then take these
ideas and use them to add to and improve my own creations.  Sometimes Lego
comes out with something that inspires me in this way too.  So I guess I
would say that getting ideas from others is an important way to improve on
you're creativity.  As for getting step by step instructions for specific
sets, well may be these people are looking for instructions for a set they
had as a child for nostalgic reasons.

I agree with Kevin and Silas. Back in the 60's (when I was a child), I remember getting the Junior Constructor set #717, for Christmas. The only instructions were on the inside of the box top. It was a 500 piece set, and there were only 3 pictures (...) (26 years ago, 24-May-99, to lugnet.general)
