How many?  It hardly seems fair to rank the popularity of your forum based
on people who haven't even participated in it.

So what? Sorry Dave, you are just coming off as bitter here. BZP is a great
place to hang out. And yes, it _is_ one of, if not the most popular Lego site
out there - and yes even more popular than.... Mask Of Destiny (gasp!). Would it
have been that hard for you to pass up this post without taking pot-shots at
another site that just happens to draw your visitors away from your site? And
really - do you really have to post to be part of the community? Of couse not,
to suggest that is just silly. So saying we have memebrs that never posted is
not really saying anything afterall. There are plenty of benifits memebrs can
have without posting, but still being a member. Like you can see who is
currently looking at the forum. You can see members who have been part of the
forum for months and have no posts browsing the forum daily. Some people like
the benefits of begin a member with Private Message ability, profile viewing
ability, etc, yet have not taken the jump into actually posting. AND you can
still do things like making trades, entering contest, sending their friends
private messages, etc... all with never posting - but still being a member. You
see what I am saying here?

But the mere existence of the post-count reward system still artificially
inflates the total post-count over time.  People start finding ways to boost
their count to earn the next little "cookie" by getting in on every thread
they can, whereas without the icons and titles and such they'll be more
likely to only post when they feel they've got something worth contributing.

You are so far off here it is funny. No matter what age group you aim for there
will always be people that post just because they like the sound of thier
fingers hitting the keyboard. We have it here on Lugnet, it happens on
Bricklink's forums - and neither one of them have a "cookie" reward for getting
to the next level of post count rank. So what if the kids like to get new ranks?
Is it actually hurting anybody? Does it mean BZP is not as popular as it looks?
The answer is no.

And what does post count have to do with the total amount of memebs anyway? This
is just more bitterness here. And if we were talking about total number of posts
I could point out BZP gets more posts in an hour than Lugnet gets in a day. But
posts and total number of members are different things.

And I noticed you failed to mention that we do regular sweeps to clean out
non-active memebrs. The filter is set on certian guidelines and every so often
the dead accounts get cleaned out. And every site has lots of memebrs that sign
up and never post. I am sure Lugnet has a ton of them, and there are lots of
users on Bricklink that sign up but never buy anything - so who cares? By saying
BZP has them and thus skews how popular BZP really is is nothing more than pure
bitterness. Sorry Dave, BZP has over 7,000 members, deal with it.

Anyways, the whole idea of comparing total quantities of BZP "members" vs.
LUGNET "members" is a bit skewed, as the current total of official members on
LUGNET probably still refers to paid memberships, which would be more
accurately compared to BZP Premiere Members.  I'm not sure if there's a
public tally of total number of registered LUGNET users, but that'd be a
more equivalent comparison to the basic BZP member.  And now that the whole
confusion about what LUGNET membership involves is being cleared up, I expect
there will be a steady influx of new blood throughout the next year.

You know, it is you that compared the members on Lugnet to the members on BZP -
but do you know that had nothing to do with Alex's post? All Alex wanted was to
see if Todd could do something to try to "improve posting and membership." In
fact, here is the point of his post:

"I was thinking that Lugnet should make a few changes which would improve
posting and membership."

So why you went off on some BZP bash is beyond me.
