Well it's done! Today I went out and got a new 48x48 baseplate and used it
to cut a 8x16 light gray baseplate. Thanks to everyone for your replies,
comments and ideas, they helped me decide what to do. I think I will try to
clean up my old "moon surface" and 50x50 baseplates and hold on to them.
Even though I don't use them now, one never knows when those older or unused
Lego parts will come in handy.
