And more: what is the current army hierarchy from soldier to ...?

Depends on army

Canadian Armed Forces

A full listing of Canadian Forces ranks, with insignias, is
available here:  http://www.dnd.ca/menu/insignia/index_e.htm

When I did that "court-martial" email I messed up when I put
"1st Lieutenant".  I don't know what that is either..., I meant
to put 2nd Lieutenant.  That's the first Canadian Forces officer
rank (after Officer Cadet).  I felt that Grand Admiral Muffin
Head at least deserved to remain commissioned..., even though
I did assign him to an NCO, "Staff Sergeant Jar-Jar Binks", which
is also probably a bogus rank (it is in Canada as least).

I'm now trying to figure out how to assign ranks to my Classic
Space minifigs.  My guess though is that the uniform colours
are not indicative of rank so much as duty (command, science,
service, etc.).
