Funny thing happened this past weekend when someone called me an AFOL. It
took me back for a second and I actually felt a bit offended. I wasn't • sure
why till I though about it some. I don't consider myself a "Fan of LEGO",
but more a "Fan of Building"; it just happens that I have found LEGO • bricks
to be the best product to build with. I don't collect LEGO sets; I buy • LEGO
parts for my projects.

I didn't start buying LEGO products just because I wanted the sets or the
parts, but I wanted them so that I could build things and make my ideas • come
to life. I will admit that I have fond memories from my childhood of
building with my LEGO sets, but there again I don't think it's the sets I
enjoyed so much as building and playing.

Maybe we need another acronym, Fan of Building (FOB), or just Building
Enthusiast (BE).I don't know, but I don't consider myself an AFOL, just a
fan of building and being creative.

I second that. I build things, I dont collect lego.

In fact I rarely buy lego sets.
I buy bulk bricks and used parts mainly.

Frankly the way lego sets are going I shall buy even fewer as I see them as
being counter to what I usually like to build (i.e. too much juniorization,
and specialist parts that have little context outside the set or theme they
are included in)
Bulk is great though - but we need more variety.

I have NO allegance to the Lego brand.
I am happy to continue to buy lego though as it is currently the quality
leader.
I would use an alternative brick source tomorrow if it produced the right
quality.

lawrence

(...) I am basically the same as both of you when it comes to LEGO. I haven't bought a set newer than 1998. But funny thing, we post to LUGNET, read other articles, reply to posts, and discuss LEGO...... Sooooo that would make you AFOLB's --- Adult (...) (23 years ago, 16-Mar-01, to lugnet.general)
