I know it's a thin line, but according to dictionary.com "fan" is
short for "fanatic" and is defined as "A person marked or motivated
by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause.". I agree that
I would fall into that category, it's not the LEGO product itself
that I show extreme enthusiasm for, but for what you can do with the
product, and the effects that are produced.

Being an active member of multiple fandoms, I must disagree with your
characterisation of fans. SF fandom, in particular, is made up of people
who revel in the term "fan".

Actually, SF fandom and Lego fandom aren't all that different, when you
get right down to it. They're both populated by adults of many ages who
like to do things that "normal" people consider silly and/or childish.
SF fans and AFOLs both have profound interest in something that the
mainstream tends to think of as being only for kids. Both groups spend
large amounts of money supporting their fannish habits, often to the
consternation of non-fannish spouses. And true fans don't mind being
called fans, because we know it's true. :-)
