When I hear the word "Fan" I think of 14 y/o girls with rooms covered in
N'Sync posters. I do not have my room covered in LEGO bed sheets or, big red
logos on the walls. I read LUGNET to share ideas and see how others are
using the bricks to build their creations.

I know it's a thin line, but according to dictionary.com "fan" is short for
"fanatic" and is defined as "A person marked or motivated by an extreme,
unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause.". I agree that I would fall into
that category, it's not the LEGO product itself that I show extreme
enthusiasm for, but for what you can do with the product, and the effects
that are produced.

Yeah, it's probably just a game of semantics...but it was just something
that crossed my mind this week, not a big deal either way.

Funny thing happened this past weekend when someone called me an AFOL. • It
took me back for a second and I actually felt a bit offended. I wasn't • sure
why till I though about it some. I don't consider myself a "Fan of • LEGO",
but more a "Fan of Building"; it just happens that I have found LEGO • bricks
to be the best product to build with. I don't collect LEGO sets; I buy • LEGO
parts for my projects.

I didn't start buying LEGO products just because I wanted the sets or • the
parts, but I wanted them so that I could build things and make my • ideas
come
to life. I will admit that I have fond memories from my childhood of
building with my LEGO sets, but there again I don't think it's the • sets I
enjoyed so much as building and playing.

Maybe we need another acronym, Fan of Building (FOB), or just Building
Enthusiast (BE).I don't know, but I don't consider myself an AFOL, • just a
fan of building and being creative.

I second that. I build things, I dont collect lego.

In fact I rarely buy lego sets.
I buy bulk bricks and used parts mainly.

Frankly the way lego sets are going I shall buy even fewer as I see them • as
being counter to what I usually like to build (i.e. too much • juniorization,
and specialist parts that have little context outside the set or theme • they
are included in)
Bulk is great though - but we need more variety.

I have NO allegance to the Lego brand.
I am happy to continue to buy lego though as it is currently the quality
leader.
I would use an alternative brick source tomorrow if it produced the • right
quality.

regards
lawrence

I am basically the same as both of you when it comes to LEGO.   I haven't
bought a set newer than 1998.  But funny thing, we post to LUGNET, read • other
articles, reply to posts, and discuss LEGO...... Sooooo that would make • you
AFOLB's --- Adult Fan of Lego Bricks.

Royal Anecdote:  When 18th century architect James Wyatt petitioned • England's
Regent (later King George IV) to change his last name to Wyattville (to
differentiate himself from his famous uncle), George exclaimed "Veal or • Mutton,
it doesn't matter what you call yourself".

(...) I disagree (that it is not a big deal). Your point is valid. I think most of us are AFOBs (Adults Fond Of Building) more than AFOLs. We all grew up with Lego and appreciate the products, but in the end, building, creating and expressing (...) (23 years ago, 17-Mar-01, to lugnet.general)
