IMHO, I think that 70 years out, either side, is a minimum - that's 2 (almost
3) generations, which means that (for the history side):

a) not a lot of people who lived in that era are still around, so nasty
memories wouldn't get brought back to life (unlike the artist who did the • death
camp/holocaust sets)

b) there's enough of a connection to other popular media (movies, TV) that
there's a connection for the kids to make to other forms of entertainment
they've seen

For the future, 70 years is 3 generations forward, far enough that there's no
chance of confusion with reality or potentially realistic technology.

Is Adventurers set before 1930?  I think the movie The Mummy (the recent one)
was set in the 20s, and it really reminded me of the desert Adventurers
subtheme, more than Indiana Jones movies do.  The guns on this subtheme are
pointless though, unless you get hungry and need to kill the snake for food or
something.  I have a hard time even knowing what is supposed to be a weapon on
the futuristic sets though.  Is that a laser, of just the ship's headlights?  A
savage battle weapon, or a tool for excavating alien fossils?  Look at 6836-
those forward facing antennas could be weapons, or just part of a
communications system.

(...) Why is this ambiguity a bad thing? To tell you the absolute truth, it's just a bunch of plastic. But if you want it to be weapons, that's what it is. Or maybe it's part of the drive system. Heck, maybe it's just chrome trim and tailfins. Steve (24 years ago, 5-Jul-00, to lugnet.general)
