Actually, in the US it's a Federal law that they have to put the number of
pieces contained on the outside of the box. It was part of a "truth-in-
packaging" set of laws passed in the late 1960's.

Really?!?

I just ordered two 6441 sets.  I was a bit puzzled to see that the piece
count, which the LUGNET database lists as 433, was *not* on the outside of the
box as I'm used to seeing.  Both boxes were the same -- no piece count.  So,
TLG broke the law?

As a matter of fact, I picked up some boxes at a KayBee store not too long ago
that also didn't have a piece count on the box. It was a Night Lord's
Castle (6097), and contained a different set of catalogs than I was used to as
well (having purchased other 6097's)... but there was no hint as to the country
it originated from. Then, I think last weeks sometime or perhaps earlier, I
went back to the SAME KayBee, and bought a Rapid River Village-- same thing: no
piece count on the box. However, this one yeilded something unique: a Lego
catalog with japanese writing! Hence, it appears that KayBee buys the boxes
from other countries and sells them in their stores (which is probably why
KayBee always has an erratic selection of Lego-- something else I've noticed)

In this case, it's hard to tell who's breaking the law... I'd argue that KayBee
is technically at fault since TLC probably didn't deal directly with them, and
hence did not sell KayBee 'illegal' boxes.... of course I could be completely
wrong, and maybe KayBee dealt with a non-american division of TLC, in which
case TLC is to blame... either way, it's still rather silly... I count it as
somewhat of a find, seeing as I now have a couple "rare" (for the US) catalogs
and boxes!

(...) Can anyone substantiate this law? Can you point to a reference to it on the web? I know model kits usually don't give piece counts, and puzzles give only approximate piece counts (your 1000 piece puzzle probably doesn't have exactly 1000 (...) (25 years ago, 3-Feb-00, to lugnet.general)
