As far as "normalcy" goes, I've drawn blood a few times separating two
tighly-sealed 2x2 plates. Any bigger a plate and you can bend them just enough
to create a seam into which a fingernail will fit. 2x2's are just too small,
and God forbid they're old. I have more than a few of these with ugly,
disfiguring gauges along the edges where a tack had to be probed into the seam
to separate them.
My backup submission here will be a 2x2 tile in the center of a large brick
baseblate (a la BASIC from days of yore). It's completely inflexible, and
unless you have fingernails of steel (which I don't), you can't do it without a
probing, needle-like device (or a good, solid hammer).
