  Re: Thoughts on Parts Taxonomy

(...) Hey, don't go blaming poor Partsref for something that's an LDraw problem. ;) (22 years ago, 13-May-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

(...) that part (and it's name) come from partsref - we try to use partsref names whenever we can, unless it's for a part that isn't available as a dat yet. But even for X numbers (our custom parts), we will eventually rename them to whatever the (...) (22 years ago, 12-May-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

  Re: Thoughts on Parts Taxonomy

(URL) would what you're saying allow more obvious names like "worm gear" - as I think of it, because that's what it logically interacts with and looks like to me, at least - help me to find that name for a part often used in gear-reduction (...) (22 years ago, 12-May-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

  Re: Thoughts on Parts Taxonomy

I'm not going to quote it because I agree with it in total. I'd like to add some related thoughts that have been nagging at me ever since I first encountered Brick{Bay,Link} and LDraw... The thing that bugs me most is the names given to the parts. (...) (22 years ago, 11-May-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

  Re: Thoughts on Parts Taxonomy

I like the idea of better indexing, and would be happy to incorporate any new method into peeron - now someone just has to write it :) I know that indexing by a non-unique field (which is the part number) is a bad thing - it's just the easiest and (...)   Thoughts on Parts Taxonomy

Currently, there are three active major part databases out there: Partsref, Peeron Inventories, and the BrickLink Catalog. All have their advantages: Partsref has keywords, cross-referencing to other databases, and usually excellent pictures[1]. (...) (22 years ago, 10-May-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

(...) BrickLink catalog, added last month by Brett Antaya and spokane1 (Jonathan McKay?). And with luck the inventory of Slave I will be available tomorrow. . . TWS Garrison Remove caps to reply (22 years ago, 6-May-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

Re: Going nuts trying to identify a part! (redux)

(...) Actually, I don't even recognize the parts. My knowledge of 2001--2002 parts is minimal---I think I have fewer than a dozen open sets from those years. ---...--- TWS Garrison tgarriso@math.purdue.edu (URL) (22 years ago, 6-Apr-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

Re: Going nuts trying to identify a part! (redux)

(...) You do recognize the part itself, yes? I know the numbers aren't canon yet--but the geometry of the piece (4x4 base to 2x4 top, last brick height toes in at 45-deg, with 2x2 hollow studs and two one- finger click hinge bits) I hope is clear. I (...) (22 years ago, 5-Apr-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

Re: Going nuts trying to identify a part! (redux)

(...) Thomas--if you've got it in immediate memory, there are two items that've defying my search: The new Jack Stone container (part # stamped on the 4x4x4 container piece is 30639) and the "doors" that connect via a click hinge (numbered 30625).   Re: HELP identify a 2x4 plate, 1/2 thickness (not 1/3)

(...) Clone? (do they have LEGO(r) on the studs?) Tyco(tm), IIRC, used 1/2 thick plates. But I'm hazy on clones (they're not Lego, after all...) so could be all wet. ++Lar (22 years ago, 24-Feb-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary, lugnet.off-topic.clone-brands)

Re: HELP identify a 2x4 plate, 1/2 thickness (not 1/3)

(...) Pedro, good question: No, I was NOT sure they were LEGO, but now that I have checked the studs, they are NOT imprinted with "LEGO", but rather "TYCO" is imprinted on the very center of the plate. Into the trash they go. (Just kidding.) Mystery (...) (22 years ago, 24-Feb-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

Re: HELP identify a 2x4 plate, 1/2 thickness (not 1/3)

(...) Paul, are you *absolutely sure* that those parts are from LEGO? I mean, do they have the LEGO logo printed on top of the studs? I understand some parts like those exist, but not from LEGO (they were made by a clone brand, sorry I dunno which). (...) (22 years ago, 24-Feb-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary)

  HELP identify a 2x4 plate, 1/2 thickness (not 1/3)

I found an unusual part while inventorying a recent eBay purchase of used LEGO. I found two identical elements that are blue 2x4 plates -- except when the two of them are connected, they equal the thickness of a regular brick. In other words, they (...) (...) The height on this part name was given in plates. 3 1/3 bricks = 7 plates. And see (URL) for new developments. :) Steve (22 years ago, 16-Feb-02, to lugnet.db.brictionary, lugnet.cad.dev)
