To Pawel:

I feel HUGELY deferential to anyone that was a founder of this crazy thing. Somehow the words “Castle World” inspire a kind of obsessive fascination that no other project has yet matched. If you, Pawel, feel inclined to participate in some way or other; then I, Hop-Frog, feel inclined to give you more room to express your opinions. So please do so.

If you were somewhat quietly offering to take reign of the beast again, I am only too eager to accept your offer. So, speak up, Man!

I like your Guilds idea a lot, but how does it get implemented by the participants unless they ALL have admin rights to CW? Or is that your point -- that everyone be responsible for their own stuff?

More generally:

I’m slow and lazy, but I’d still like to finish the archive of CW in the form it took prior to Chris M. abandoning it. That stage of CW is a kind of culmination of what everyone had done up to that point so it properly and easily becomes an archive of CW as it more or less collapsed. To complete the archive (which is very nearly finished) and to continue as curator of the cw newsgroup on lugnet is all to which I am willing to commit at this time. Certainly those duel roles might mean that I could also be part of a CW administrative committee.

That leaves open a question of what to do with the rest of the 40-45 MB site that is available on ozbricks. While anywhere else will do, what is cool about ozbricks is that it requires no banner of any kind and comes with an email address. It also allows FTP access so the way you organize anything on your own computer is exactly how it gets loaded to ozbricks. One of the difficulties of the abandoned geocities site, and other “free website” providers tend to be just like it, is that it requires banners on every page and it is that stuff that must be removed from the archived site. Very tedious stuff.

A domain name “http://www.castle-world.org” is apparently available to us from Dave Eaton. It would be cool to use this domain name, but I have yet to check it with the ozbricks people. I do want them to get credit for the webspace they are providing us and the current URL, not the domain name above, provides the only real acknowledgement that the site is hosted at ozbricks. We shall see...

So, what precisely are people up for? When people offer to contribute they have to be more specific. Very specific.

Offering to help with website doesn’t mean much unless you are able and willing to do things like code basic HTML (not at all hard if you keep it simple) and manipulate graphics with software. That’s one end of things I can offer help and point out tutorials, and in some cases free or trial software.

Offering to help with ideas for CW is good but needs to be extremely concrete. For example, I tried to get to the CQ site in both Opera and IE and was unable to open up any of the navigation tools. The appearing and disappearing pull down menu never delivered any of the links I tried to get to -- but I admit to having zero patience for stuff that isn’t working across browsers, esp. if one of them is Opera. To understand CQ more fully I obviosuly need access to the rules, plans, maps, etc. Also, there seems to be some dispute over the rules of CQ as being artibitrary, I read something like that from a poster here on Lugnet. Has any of this been hammered out more fully yet?

Pawel is suggesting that part of CW’s mission was to create a kind of online analogue for things taking place offline, or that at least could take place offline. Of course, “The Gathering” is much like this description of things -- an event planned online, that actually took place offline, that was later documented online.

Once again I feel obliged to explain that everything concerning CW is up for grabs, except that I would STILL like the “link buttons” that I developed from Craigo’s original logo artwork to remain available. That’s all -- link buttons! New - different - additional link buttons can be made. A new - different - additional logo can be designed and utilized. A new - different - additional splash page and navigation scheme can be implemented. So if anyone has anymore to say about the link buttons I’m going to sacrifice an effigy of Pawel N to the Dark Lords! My voodoo doll of Pawel N is in your hands...

...post wisely.

BTW, we have the discussions here because it’s our newsgroup. I don’t understand why anyone wants to have these discussions privately. Post it here so that everyone can see it and brainstorm together at the same time. If others do not want to read it they have the means to skip over the material being posted. I, for one, do not want any additional material in my email inbox -- not when there’s a chance I might kill it alongside the spam I am often deleting. And again, what else is “lugnet.castle.org.cw” for but to have these discussions? Later, hopefully, we shall have better things with which to fill this newsgroup.

How is the CW “community” helped by it going private?
