To my mind, unless the community tries to consolidate a little more --
thereby saving time and resources -- I think we shall ultimately fragment
into cacophony. In a way, it has already begun...the ultimate
compartmentalized geek catastrophe, brick-style!

I couldnt disagree more. As the community grows (and, from what I know, it is
growing constantly) - having a central place to communicate will devolve into
cacophony. Lugnet is such a great central place because it automatically
divides itself into nice, neat little areas (space, trains, loc.au, etc) - at
times (and i;m sure to a new comer) it can seem like chaos. But really,
different sites serving the community in different ways is bringing order to the
chaos, rather than the other way around.
It also opens up the ability to serve more varied types of the community (young,
old, out-going, shy) in more ways. Unity is maintained by cross-linking..
which, C-C.com does extensively between all the major theme-sites. Think,
instead of one, giant website, a bunch of smaller sites forming an
inter-connected web.
It seems to me that your real problem is that the c-c forums interupt your
limited online LEGO time, and therefore is a personal pain, rather than leading
to the break down of the online LEGO community.
And as far as being a geek catastrophe ... well, seeing that were an online
community, I think thats already happpened.

| (...) Seriously, has anyone thought about gatewaying lugnet.castle to the cc forum at all? It's probably an unrealistic prospect, with message coding issues (!) and such, but I am aware something similar was done with the (crynwrr) robotics mailing (...) | I totally agree with Jason on this. In the end, I -- and probably many, many people besides myself -- just don't have the time to visit all the many forums that are popping up. I pretty much gave up RTL for Lugnet. I try to occasionally read the (...) (21 years ago, 22-Sep-03, to lugnet.castle, FTX)
