Jeremy,
I was very excited to see the announcement of a marketplace project. The
day after reading about it me and my 6 yr old daughter sat down and built a
double wide stall & had a wonderful time together. I'll try to get pictures
to the site soon but wanted to thank you & your colaborators for putting the
idea to paper:)
I have been following the project somewhat here on LUGNET and have not
seen many complaints. The only whining I see is for people who seem to have
no concept of what a successful marketplace would be...that should not be
something that brings you down or makes you feel the project is a failure in
any way!
The best merchants in any town are from out of town! Most common people
who live in towns are peasants or tradesmen/women...that is they either
perform a service or work locally at one of only a few jobs available. If
for example there is an apple orchard near the town, the landowner will
employ a good portion of the towns workforce during picking season ... those
same people aren't going to flock to buy apples everyday, nor will the apple
owner be likely to extract the best prices day in and day out. However if an
orange merchant comes to town...you get the idea.
A good market would be a temporary thing, much like a circus or
carnival...it would come to town, set up, sell a few days and leave. A
market stall would most likely be little more than an open tent as that is
the most portable shelter so a 16x16 baseplate really is a super standard to
use to keep the idea more authentic. How can even the best merchant push
his/her wares on you as you drive by in a cart/carriage?? The road should
only be as wide as to accomodate the maximum amount of foot traffic, carts
would only impeed sales. An alley between tents big enough to accomodate
thiefs? I don't think so...but an alley just big enough to set empty crates
& other debris in is a must!
Of course the baseplate should be green, the market sets up away from the
local stores in an unused area/field...the only other option is the jousting
arena but the local lord refuses to cancel the weekends tournament! A rug
for the interior may be a good idea to help minimize tripping customers. If
the market place gathers in a particular town often enough it may be
adventageous to lay some cobblestones (bring your 2x2 rnd plates!),
especially if inclement weather is common.
Anyways, I think the standard you all made up was well thought out & very
conducive for a great project. Thanks Again!
Brett

| Jeremy et al, I wanted to add a few comments on this. First, I absolutely agree with Brett's feelings on the subject (see the post I replied to). The idea of the MM is fun, and green baseplates work just fine, if you consider the open field usage (...) (22 years ago, 4-Nov-02, to lugnet.castle)
