Probably first-come, first-served which is essentially random as far as the user
is concerned.
As an idea you might be able to work around the problem by shrinking all studs
in the completed model. Shrinking them by a couple of percent would probably
look OK and reduce the instance of this problem.
If I think about it this might be a nice addition to l3p or LDview POV export.
