Yikes!
So you want everyone stuck with 111 for all eternity? With the current system,
I'm free to remove 111.dat if I don't want it, and end up with a "clean" look to
the directory. With your system, that would never be possible!
Over the years, I think a lot of issues that SHOULD be handled in software are
being handled via the parts library or the file system, through clever uses like
this.
In my opinion (as a software author), I think this sort of movement file should
be handled at the software level. A single file of lookups should be used, so
the software knows 111->2222 (perhaps with some translation and rotation
adjustments thrown in), and on load the file translates 111 to 2222, and on
save, it's updated to current. This is basically how MLCAD is using the ~Moved
To files currently, isn't it? It's just that this database of info is all over
the place in separate records per file.
This isn't at all a new idea, of course, it's how parts are "converted" from
.DAT format into LDD.
With MLCAD (as well as any other software that supports a search path for
parts), I believe one could even move all the current "litter" files into a
separate directory and add that directory to the parts search path, thereby
cleaning up the parts dir.
If you go to your new aliasing scheme, that's no longer possible. Your system
promotes "bloat" to the directory. The current system allows one (with some
effort, admittedly), to forego backwards compatibility for neatness.
