Umm... you REALLY should use a better string element than mine!
It is really not very accurate as it doesn't model the three strands
at all. It was just a quick hack, and it has fixed colors, if LEGO
ever do red or white string it won't work.

Will it be a problem if LEGO ever do green string? ;)

er... ya. Didn't they actually DO green string already or am I
misremembering?

At this time, using the best available string element seems like
the way to go.
AFAIK, Larry's string is the best.

That's pathetic.

Is this one any better?
http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cgi?f=parts/x572b.dat

It does have the advantage of actually being submitted to the Parts
Tracker, and now it's certified for the next release.

I like Larry's string part better for several reasons.  His braid is
implemented as twisted surfaces rather than edge lines so it'll show
up in both LDRAW and POV.  It also uses many less poly's so it'll draw
significantly faster.  And finally, it's much shorter so it'll handle
tighter curves, maybe even knots.

And FWIW I have spiderman hanging from a white string right in front
of me, so the color should be removed from the string element.

Should the black be changed to "main color" but the grey left as is? My quick
cheat was that by using grey with the black I was sort of, at low rez, mimicking
the highlighting that you get from the string's surface (most string fibers are
pretty reflective if you look at them really closely)

But if a string is green, is grey the second color? or light green?

Too bad we don't have a "second main" color!

I'm not opposed to submitting this to tracker if people want, and making the
changes that people think it needs. In theory. It's just actually doing that
which has proven hard so if someone else wanted to take it under their wing,
drop me a "line". (duck)

LEGO string is a tri-twist.  LSynth knows about twisting things (e.g.
minifig-chain).  LSynth's twist amount/fixed segment is configurable.

We could decide what the sortest segment we would ever need and then maybe use
3, 6, or 9 cylinders to aproximate the tri-twist.  With 6 or 9 cylinders, we'd
split the length in half, or thirds and have three cylinders per segment.  We'll
also need 6 diagonally cut cylinders at the end of the segment to make the ends
cut off flat.  Maybe we only need this for end-caps on the very ends of string.

This would bypass the two main color problem, but with an increase in part
complexity.

As for knots, maybe we could create an official part that is a string-knot.
Nasty to try to get LSynth constrains that packed together.
