I like Larry's string part better for several reasons. His braid is
implemented as twisted surfaces rather than edge lines so it'll show
up in both LDRAW and POV. It also uses many less poly's so it'll draw
significantly faster. And finally, it's much shorter so it'll handle
tighter curves, maybe even knots.
And FWIW I have spiderman hanging from a white string right in front
of me, so the color should be removed from the string element.

| (...) Should the black be changed to "main color" but the grey left as is? My quick cheat was that by using grey with the black I was sort of, at low rez, mimicking the highlighting that you get from the string's surface (most string fibers are (...) (20 years ago, 26-Apr-05, to lugnet.cad)

| (...) Those are definitely advantages toward Larry's file. We should probably integrate Larry's code into my subfile, one way or the other. One way to integrate the part files would be to submit Larry's file as a a subfile, in parts\s\, and have the (...) (20 years ago, 26-Apr-05, to lugnet.cad)
