Hi John,
Sure I do !
You say But for some reason I didnt realize that the flat faces
of the pentagons would line up with the ajoining hexagon Actually the
problem is that triangle in the pentagons should not be equilateral. The
vertices inside the triangle should be shorter than outside vertices , 3.4
studs instead of 4 to be precise. I think that if you manage to build
triangles that are 4 studs / 3.5 studs / 3.5 studs, the resulting thing will
be much closer to a soccer ball
Cheers,

Yup, I realize that now. Holding the big ball in your hands can really make
those ideas clear! The problem is, how to do it within the limits of the
Lego System?

I dont have the parts to try this out, so my suggestion may be highly
disposable.
How about making each black triangle a 4/3/4?
By this I mean: each black/white join would be 4/4, and each black/black join
would be 4/3. The pentagon wouldnt look quite so pretty, and may look more like
a pinwheel, but maybe it will be flatter -- Im really only guessing, but its
worth a try.
I find your creation quite impressive. Why didnt I think of that.

| (...) I tried 4/3/3 - but it didn't work. The triangles couldn't connect to form the pentagon. The other problem is since I'm using the 1x4 hinge plates, if you go shorter than four studs on a side of the triangle you have to come up with a (...)
