Hinges, and whatever color I feel I have the best pieces to work with in.
Sometimes I intentionally do different models in certain colors, but not often.

Click hinges are the gift to lego-mech-kind. I also love plates, other
types of hinges, those wonderful little lightsaber handles, turntables,
those 'multiple-direction-blocks, or whatever they are called.
Also, it helps alot to really like what you are building. This sounds weird
probably, but if I don't reallylike the mech I'm doing, I don't tend to do
it well. Maybe you all understand.
