well, most of my mecha are under 6 inches tall so:
Taps - I can't stress enough how useful I find these things for small hip
and shoulder joints.
Minifig megaphones
1x1 clip plates and tiles
1x1 headlight brick
1x1 round plates - my favourite greebling part for some reason.
(as Stuart said) anything with studs on more than one side.
1x2 grill tiles - can't imagine life without 'em.
everything else

Ball joints - I ended up butchering a few bionicle liftarms for the balls on
the end. Crude, but effective.

4. parts in the colours and quantity the model needs.
5. an idea. - actually that should be number 1.
these five things apply whatever I'm building - not just mecha.
