I sometimes use the medium large slick VR tires (from e.g. the model
team Ferrari) "the other way around" to achieve a more low profile
look. Here's an example:

I believe that all other models I have seen use them "the correct
way", in which they look more boring.

I wouldn't worry about that. If you want, you can just start by
copying the mechanics from the 8880 or the 8448 or something similar.

Yes, it is my experience too that a full bodied car at that scale
becomes completely unplayable.
