  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) This is possible. At least to me it is. The drop down highlight menu offers three options: "highlight" "spotlight" and "---" - if you want to un-highlight, change your selection from "highlight" to "---" and hit submit. Works for me. -Lenny (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) I think what he means is to 'lowlight' a post. Like, if you not only think it shouldn't be hightlighted by yourself, it shouldn't be highlighted by some others either. -Suz (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) Exactly how I'm reading it as well, Suz. There are many times I've seen something spotlighted and thought to myself, 'Why in the world would anyone spotlight this? I wish I could cancel out their vote.' Then I realize just how open to abusive (...) (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) Suz, Thanks for the clarification. Yes. I mean lowlight. Kevin (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) <snip> (...) It's a good idea on paper. The issue will arise when Group A has more people than Group B--Group A can always make sure nothing from Group B ever gets highlighted just by everyone in Group A 'lowlighting' the post. I mean if we (...) (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) LUGNET history note: we already went through this. When highlighting was first available, it was possible to give a negative rating to messages. This feature was abused/misused almost immediately -- or at least, people perceived that it was (...) (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

In lugnet.admin.suggestions, Steve Bliss wrote: <snip> (...) Well then that,s different, isn't it? The ability to choose whether my post should be able to be highlighted or not--that's a pretty neat little thing... Would that 'non highlighting' flag (...)   Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) Thanks for the elaboration, Steve. LUGNET DID have such a system, and it was not uniformly positively received. This has been alluded to in other replies as well. A suggestion to again allow both negative and positive weighting should not be (...) (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) Hi Dave, I was asking for the ability to prevent or remove any highlighting only from my own posts. I guess I felt it would be only the author's perogative (i.e. I wouldn't have the ability to lowlight anyone else's post.). (...) Kevin (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) Yes, I picked this up too. (...) Yes, Larry I had offered the ability to prevent or remove any highlight to my own posts. This would give me a bit of control, and send message to others about my highlighting desires, but still prevents abuse (...) (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) This is something I would support, though it might be hard to do from the NNTP or SMTP interfaces (unless there is some flag that could be put in the post or a header). It might be nice to be able to do after the fact also, but verification (...) (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) I would probably suggest 2 bits tagged on the post: 1) Author has prevented highlighting/spotlighting 2) Admin has prevented highlighting/spotlighting The effect of the bits would actually be pretty hidden. Instead of preventing people from (...) (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) I would have no problem with the author having that ability, but the only time I would consider allowing Admin to do it would be with "murfled" posts (as described in the leaked p&p doc). And I would probably say in that particular case, it (...) (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)

  Re: Vote to unhighlight?

(...) How about by author request also (since not necessarily everyone would be able to unhighlight their posts). Frank (20 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)
