I was thinking of something like what the Borland newsgroups have (They are
also on a private server). There is a group 'public.borland.attachments' (or
something like that) where zipped files are accepted, and the messages are
automatically purged after X days. It's quite a practical way when you want to
keep to the newsgroups, but still need to transfer something which is not
accepted in the normal groups.
