Matt, are you giving legal advice?  :-)

Note that the disclaimer is a legal statement to protect LEGO just as much
as to protect us (as are all disclaimers on unofficial LEGO fansites).  The
legal definition of words aren't necessarily the same as Webster's definition.
For example, Black's Law Dictionary[1] defines "sponsor" (the noun form) as:

sponsor.  1. One who acts as a surety for another.  2. A legislator who
proposes a bill.  3. {Civil Law} One who voluntarily intervenes for
another without being requested to do so.

surety (shuur[-&]-tee).  1. A person who is primarily liable for the
payment of another's debt or the performance of another's obligation.
Although a surety is similar to an insurer, one important difference
is that a surety often receives no compensation for assuming liability.
A surety differs from a a guarantor, who is liable to the creditor only
if the debtor does not meet the duties owed to the creditor; the surety
      is directly liable.

In other words, we really need to have some sort of formal statement from
LEGO attorneys before we dare change any of the legal disclaimers on the
homepage.  However, I think we could safely add a modifier after it which
points to more information, including details of the donation.

p.s.  I am not a lawyer.

(...) OK, first step -- Brad's donation is now listed here: (URL) no other financial contributions or donations from LEGO have been received or (to our knowledge) sent. --Todd (24 years ago, 3-May-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
