you are correct, I'm not sure all newsreaders do it, but from my
(limited) experience, it's a common feature. I haven't actually seen
a setting that does it, it just suddenly marks messages as read, after
I read them in x-posted groups.

I'm almost certain that it sends each message once and once alone.
Back in the day (oh, about a month ago) when i was subscribed to abour
40 groups, I never got the same message twice.
